Late Autumn Lawn Care

At this point in the season, for most of us, landscaping is the last thing on our minds since the spring months seem like an eternity away. That said, even though the days are getting shorter and the temperatures are getting colder it’s still not too late to fertilize your lawn before the snow flies!

Having your lawn fertilized late in the fall can actually help encourage a healthy spring lawn. Our lawns are in constant need of care even when they are dormant. Fertilizing in late fall will provide nutrients to the grass over the wintertime. These nutrients activate immediately in the spring helping the lawn grow quickly out of dormancy.

Not only that, wintertime also brings some lawn diseases such as snow mold, fairy ring and necrotic ring spot. Fertilizing in the fall will usually prevent these from invading your lawn.

Here are some fall fertilization tips to promote a healthy landscape during winter.

Building Stone Steps

Stone steps can be built into any landscape in a relatively short amount of time so there’s still plenty of time this fall to check this project off your to-do list!

Stone has been a constant source for building for millennia. When it comes to building a set of stone steps there are a number of things to think about before you start.

First, you should determine what type of stone you are going to use. Whether you use a rough and rugged look or a smooth more sophisticated stone, you want to make sure your decision goes well with the setting taking into consideration how it pairs with topography and buildings.

Now that you have made that decision the layout is the next important thing to consider.

Typically any staircase should conform to standard building practices. 8″ of rise and at least 12″ of run is typical, but because of the medium there can be some small discrepancies involved. Try to keep the run short enough to keep it from making it awkward to walk up and down.

Preparation and calculating distances for the rise and run will help you choose the stone you are going to use for each step. Determining the number of steps is critical beforehand.

Find the run distance of the stairs and divide that by the number of steps less one step for the top step and this will tell you if you have enough steps to accomplish your build.

Preparing the base and installing drainage, if needed, and compacting the area are just a few more of the steps to getting it right when building stone steps or walkways.

Still warm enough to finish your landscaping project!

Cooler temperatures put less stress on plants, shrubs and trees and give them a better chance of taking root. It is also a great time to buy new plants and greenery as most nurseries have reduced their pricing.

The weather is forecast to continue to be seasonally warm, the perfect time to finish any landscaping projects. If you need any supplies get in touch. We are committed to providing our clients with high quality products at the best prices in town and still have lots of stock on hand.

If your landscaping projects for this year are all behind you now you can be proactive and get a head start on next year’s landscape planning, especially if you want to make changes or improvements!

We have years of experience and can assist you with your project ideas, layout plan and suggest the best materials to create a stunning lawn or garden perfectly suited to your property, and a space you’ll enjoy for seasons to come. Give us a shout at 403-818-5857.

Beautiful Backyard Pond

There’s just something about the sound of water in motion that soothes the soul. Have you been thinking about bringing a little beauty and serenity to your yard?

There are many pond options that feature a range of styles for every budget! A few things that should be considered before you can get started:

  1. Decide what type and size pond you want – most water gardens need to be at least 18 inches deep, but even deeper if fish and plant life are desired
  2. Location is important – consider visual appeal, existing water supply, whether you need a power source, accessibility for earth-moving equipment, sun exposure
  3. Water pump – if not a standing water pond you’ll need the right pump for proper flow to prevent stagnation and aeration, and to support waterfalls, fish, plant life
  4. Lighting and maintenance – for smaller home and backyard ponds think about lighting and maintenance, as well as how to prepare your pond for winter

Calgary Landscape Services has built ponds large and small, like this recent project in the image below, with everything from cascading water features to large standing ponds. If you need supplies or advice from a professional, call us at 403-818-5857. We’d love to discuss your ideas and help bring your pond vision to life!

Still lots of time for a landscaping project

It’s definitely not too late to get in another small landscaping project this fall, since there’s still some decent weather ahead. It’s amazing what you can do in a small space and with a bit of dirt and rock. You can literally change your drab, dry patch of grass to an attractive feature area in as much as a morning’s work.

This photo shows just how little you would need to create a stone feature in the front of your home with just 1 yard of 40mm of rundle rock and 1.5 yards of rec concrete.

Our garden/landscape supplies and materials are available for pickup or can be dropped off at your convenience.
