Landscape plans for the fall?

Cooler temperatures put less stress on your plants, shrubs and trees and give them a better chance of taking root. It is also a great time to buy new plants and greenery as most nurseries have reduced their pricing.

Early fall fertilizing

Repair and thicken up in the fall after going through the stresses of summer

Having your lawn fertilized late in the fall can actually help encourage a healthy spring lawn. Our lawns are in constant need of care even when they are dormant. Fertilizing in late fall will provide nutrients to the grass over the wintertime. These nutrients activate immediately in the spring helping the lawn grow quickly out of dormancy.

Not only that, wintertime also brings some lawn diseases such as snow mold, fairy ring and necrotic ring spot. Fertilizing in the fall will usually prevent these from invading your lawn.

Thinking about using sandstone as a garden border?

Sandstone is extremely versatile and can really enhance and add beauty to your property. It is composed of quartz or feldspar and because they are the most resistant minerals to weathering processes sandstone is long-lasting.

It is commonly used for outdoor building projects such as garden walls, pathways, patio surfaces, stepping stones, and garden edges and borders.

The large garden beds in the images below will be surrounded for years with a beautiful sandstone border.

If you have a sandstone project in mind, give us a call at 403-818-5857. We’re happy to discuss your ideas and answer all your questions.

Not too late to love your lawn this summer

Has your lawn been struggling? Have you tried just about everything?

Working hard on your lawn but not getting the expected results can be so frustrating. Maybe the best option is to re-sod. It’s the quickest way to a stunning “instant” lawn.

But you don’t have the inclination to lay it yourself? Calgary Landscapes can help. We have the experience and expertise to do the installation for you. Landscape supplies and materials will be dropped off and we’ll get to work!

Even with warmer temperatures during the summer months, sod can still be successfully laid. It’s important that the area to be sodded is prepared and of course it will require a little more watering. Calgary Landscape Supplies offers quality all-purpose sod that works well in most areas.

If you’re not 100% sure how much sod your project requires, please experiment with our material calculator or simply give us a shout. Sod is normally sold by the square foot. Tip: you may want to add a few additional feet just in case you have a few corners to cut.

Does your property need a facelift?

Decorative river rock is extremely popular and has so many functions. From ground covers, accents in garden beds, decorative borders, to driveway and home borders and cleaning up water run-off areas, river rock is very versatile.

River rocks have been smoothed by flowing water and don’t decompose so they don’t need to be replaced each season making it an affordable option.

Check out the images below of one of our recent landscaping projects – you can see how 3″ river rock and premium sod can instantly enhance the curb appeal of your home.

Concrete crush — your answer to weed control!

Believe it or not, it’s really easy to eliminate pesky weeds, grass and other growing plants in your rock areas – places you definitely don’t want them.

Don’t bother with things like weed mats that are supposed to keep the weeds out. A really simple fix is to lay a 2 to 3 inch layer of ‘concrete crush’ below your preferred rock topping. The lime in the concrete will kill just about any type of growing plant and your rock area will look great for years to come!

If the idea of dousing your yard or rock areas with chemicals makes you cringe, don’t fret over it. Give us a call at 403-818-5857 and we’ll answer all your questions about options for weed control besides nasty chemicals. We look forward to working with you to bring your landscaping project to life.
