A dry landscape garden, also referred to as a zen garden, is usually fairly small but can actually be any shape, size or dimension. They are usually meant to be seen while seated from a single viewpoint outside the garden such as a deck or a porch. Zen gardens are intended to imitate the intimate essence of nature and serve as an aid to meditation about the true meaning of life.

We designed the Zen drum garden in the image below as a peaceful retreat to practice the art of Zen drumming, a spiritual activity that helps you cultivate concentration and coordination for the mind and body. Zen gardens however, can be built to scale as a tranquil place of solitude in urban backyards to escape the noise and busy-ness of the big city.

These gardens are comprised of rock arrangements, trees, pond or water features, bushes, and the use of gravel or sand that is raked to give the impression of ripples in water in the landscaping.
